Energy Systems Integration Group honors five from Hawaii for utility leadership excellence

HONOLULU, March 21, 2019 – Five individuals from Hawaii utilities, including four from the Hawaiian Electric Companies, were among 40 national winners of the Energy Systems Integration Group’s 2019 Excellence Awards.

  • For leading the way in utility commitment to clean energy, awards went to Alan Oshima, Hawaiian Electric Companies president and CEO, and David Bissell, Kauai Island Utility Cooperative president and CEO;
  • For leadership in distributed energy resource (rooftop solar and others) integration, awards went to Colton Ching, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president for planning & technology; Rodney Chong, Hawaiian Electric director of grid modernization and Lisa Giang, Hawaiian Electric director of advanced planning.

The awards recognize energy professionals from around the world for their contributions and accomplishments toward the planning and operation of energy systems across multiple pathways and geographical scales in ways that are reliable, economic and sustainable.

Mark Ahlstrom, president of ESIG’s Board of Directors, presented Excellence Awards to more than 40 individuals and honored two individuals with Lifetime Excellence Awards for their sustained contributions and dedication to the energy industry.

“Our power systems are rapidly transforming based on new technologies and the wishes of society,” Ahlstrom said. “These award recipients exemplify the progressive and thoughtful efforts from our engineering and technical communities that support these exciting changes. ESIG honors their hard work and provides opportunities for others to learn and build on their outstanding accomplishments.”
