Net Energy Metering
The Net Energy Metering (NEM) Program is Closed to New Applicants
Although NEM is no longer available, The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has approved new rooftop PV programs that allow customers of Hawaiian Electric to take advantage of new energy storage technology and help ensure safe, reliable service and fair treatment for all customers.
Hawaiian Electric offers programs for customers installing both traditional rooftop PV systems and systems with emerging energy-storage technologies. Click here to see all our available customer renewable programs.
Customers with a current NEM agreement and those with complete pending applications submitted prior to Oct. 13, 2015 will continue under the NEM program.
Current NEM customers who want to install more PV panels or otherwise increase their current system size may do so under the NEM Plus program. Click here to learn more about NEM Plus.
The Net Energy Metering Program Was A Huge Success
Since its inception in 2001 over 60,000 customers installed systems under the NEM program on Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii Island. As the popularity of the program increased, the annual participation grew rapidly. The success of the program can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of the solar industry in partnership with Hawaiian Electric. The rapid growth of PV in Hawaii also garnered national and international attention from other utilities, the solar industry, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory who benefited in seeing how we have met the challenges of installing so much distributed generation on the utilities' grids. In recognition of the success of NEM, Hawaiian Electric received several awards from the Solar Electric Power Association.
