2022 Technology Transfer Awards, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Hawaiian Electric received the following award from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI):

• Regional System Operation Director Henry Lee and System Operations Director (Oahu) Troy Uyehara received an EPRI Technology Transfer Award for the Operational Probabilistic Tools for Solar Uncertainty project, a collaboration with EPRI, California ISO, Duke Energy, Hawaiian Electric and Southern Company to examine how probabilistic solar forecasts could be used to support successful integration of solar power.

2021 Technology Transfer Awards, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Hawaiian Electric received the following award from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI):

• Production and Dispatchability of Large-scale PV Plants with Storage – In collaboration with Southern Company and EPRI, Jack Shriver conducted research on the benefits of coupling energy storage with large-scale photovoltaic plants to increase the value of solar. They developed a first-of-its-kind algorithm to optimize the size and duration of energy storage to improve the production and dispatchability over standalone large-scale PV plants.

2021 Purpose Driven Utility

As part of their SAP for Utilities Conference, Americas' SAP Users' Group (ASUG) takes the time to recognize excellence and the accomplishments in the form of SAP Innovation Awards. This year, Hawaiian Electric has been selected as the winner of the “Purpose Driven Utility” Award. This award recognizes that Hawaiian Electric is dedicated to giving back to its community and places an emphasis on corporate social responsibility.

2020 Technology Transfer Awards, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Hawaiian Electric received four awards from the Electric Power Research Institute for leadership and innovation work in power delivery & utilization and generation technology:

Power Delivery & Utilization

• Applied Advance Tools and Methods for Integrating Renewables and DER – applied and tested EPRI tools to better integrate renewable and distributed energy resources on to the electric grid
• Electric Vehicle and Infrastructure Modeling for Deployment Programs – investigated incentives for electric vehicle adoption
• Probabilistic Hosting Capability – incorporated time-based probabilistic analysis capability for growth of distributed energy resources in our service territories

Generation Technology

• Accurate Assessment of NO₂ (Nitrogen Dioxide) and NO_X (Nitrogen oxide) at Fossil Fuel Power Plants – improved understanding of ISRs (in-stack ratios) of NO₂ and NO_X to better assist generating units in meeting air quality standards and achieving permitting of the units.

2019 Utility of the Year (Utility Dive)

Hawaiian Electric was named “Utility of the Year” by Utility Dive. The 2019 Dive Awards recognized the industry’s top disruptors and innovators, including executives, companies, trends and breakthroughs transforming the industry.

2019 AEIC Achievement Award

Hawaiian Electric's 50 MW Schofield Generating Station was honored with an achievement award from the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies presented annually to those who provide significant contributions to advancing the operations of the electric energy industry.

2019 Best Branding Campaign (E Source Utility Ad Awards)

Hawaiian Electric was awarded the Best Branding Campaign for Project Footprint by E Source's 2019 Utility Ad Awards.

2019 Emergency Assistance Award (Edison Electric Institute, EEI)

Hawaiian Electric received Edison Electric Institute's Emergency Assistance Award for helping Pacific Gas & Electric Company with restoration work in 2018 after the Camp Fire, the deadliest, most destructive wildfire in California history.

2019 Forbes Best Mid-Size Employers Award

Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to identify the companies liked best by employees in our annual ranking of America’s best employers.

2019 Forbes Best-in-State Employers Award

Based on independent online surveys that ranked the attitude of employees toward their own company and the public perception of the company by industry employees.

2019 Best Practices in Outage Communications Bronze Award (Chartwell, Inc.)

Hawaiian Electric received this award for the development, implementation and promotion of a mobile app and online outage map/reporting tool that resulted in significant new engagement with customers.

2019 Excellence Awards (Energy Systems Integration Group, ESIG)

These awards recognize energy professionals from around the world for their contributions and accomplishments toward the planning and operation of energy systems across multiple pathways and geographical scales in ways that are reliable, economic and sustainable.

2018 SEPA Power Players Investor-Owned Utilities of the Year Award (Smart Electric Power Alliance, SEPA)

Hawaiian Electric was recognized for its grid modernization efforts and was named the top investor-owned utility of the year by SEPA.

2017 Expanding Excellence Award for Best Analytics Project (CS Week)

Hawaiian Electric received this award for its work with Stem, Inc. and Ibis Networks to provide 400 Hawaii public schools and businesses with tools to monitor electricity use and control costs while making the grid more efficient for all customers. CS Week is a premier annual educational and customer service conference serving electric, gas and water/wastewater utility professionals across the world.

2016 Renewable Grid Integration Project of the Year (DistribuTECH)

The winning project was the roll-out of in-line power regulators (IPRs) to determine if the new technology could enable Hawaiian Electric to monitor and control circuit level voltage and help increase the integration of private rooftop solar systems on island grids.

2014 Technology Transfer Award (Electric Power Research Institute, EPRI)

Hawaiian Electric was honored for work in applying Smart Grid research and development by the Electric Power Research Institute in various demonstration projects.

2003 National "Best Progress Award" (Department of Energy's Million Solar Roofs Initiative)

Maui Electric was given this award in recognition of the 1,049 solar systems installed under Maui Electric's solar water heating program in 2003.

2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 Hookela Award (Aloha United Way, AUW)

Hawaiian Electric received the Hookela Award for 2016-2019, which celebrates our employee volunteers across our companies for their tremendous effort and involvement in giving back to our communities. Collectively, the companies' volunteers raised over $400,000 for Aloha United Way in 2018.

2018 Pookela Awards - Outstanding Allied Member (Maui Hotel and Lodging Association, MHLA)

Presented to Maui Electric, the Pookela Awards honors individuals and businesses that best symbolize the "Aloha Spirit" of Maui's hospitality industry.

2018 Above and Beyond Award (Employer Support of Guard and Reserve, ESGR)

Hawaii Electric Light was recognized for going above and beyond in its support for its employees who are members of the National Guard and Reserve Forces.

2018 Spirit of Caring Award (Maui United Way)

Presented to Maui Electric, the Spirit of Caring Award honors individual volunteers, businesses and/or organizations whose values and concerns for humankind are demonstrated through their leadership, service and commitment to the people of our community.

2003 Mauli Ola Award (American Lung Association of Hawaii)

Hawaiian Electric was presented this award for its support in all three of the American Lung Association's primary programs - Tobacco Control, Asthma Education and Clean Air Quality.
