Popular Programs
Shared Solar
Community-Based Renewable Energy, often called shared-solar, provides a way for participating subscribers who do not have privately-owned rooftop solar to benefit from the electricity generated by a solar energy facility located in their utility service territory. By becoming a subscriber of a shared solar facility you can lower your electric bill and use solar without having to put anything on your roof.
Shift and Save
Looking for a way to save money on your electric bill? Our Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan may be right for you.
Shift and Save enables you to save money if you shift your energy use away from the high-demand evening and overnight hours that are at a higher kWh rate. The more you shift your energy usage away from those hours, the more money you could save.
Customer Incentive Programs
Incentive programs empower customers to actively participate in Hawaii’s clean energy movement and help to operate a safe and reliable electric grid for all customers. These programs allow customers to install technology and receive compensation (usually via a bill credit) for grid services that benefit the grid above and beyond the basic interconnection requirements.
Hawaii Energy Marketplace
Hawaii Energy’s online store offers discounted prices on energy-efficient LED lighting, water savers, and energy saving power strips. They offer great prices and $10 flat rate shipping on all orders.
Rooftop Solar Programs
Battery Bonus
Hawaiian Electric will pay a cash incentive and provide bill credits for customers on Oahu to add energy storage (a battery) to an existing or new rooftop solar system. These perks will help move Hawaii toward its goal of 100% clean energy by 2045 and add more renewable resources to the grid in the short-term when the AES coal-fired plant is retired in September 2022.
Customer Grid Supply Plus
Customer Grid-Supply Plus (CGS Plus) allows customers to install private rooftop solar or other renewables that export energy to the electric grid throughout the day. CGS Plus also requires the use of equipment that allows the utility to manage output to maintain safe, reliable grid operation.
Customers receive a monthly bill credit for energy delivered to the grid, which helps to offset the cost of energy pulled from the grid when the system isn’t producing enough energy to meet the household demand. The export credit is fixed through Oct. 20, 2022.
Smart Export
Smart Export allows customers to install a private rooftop solar or other renewable system and a battery energy storage system. Customers are expected to charge the battery storage system from the rooftop solar or other renewable system during the daylight hours (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) and use that energy to power their home in the evening.
However, customers are able to receive a credit for any energy exported to the grid during the evening, overnight and early morning hours. Energy exported to the grid during the daylight hours is not compensated. Under Smart Export, customers receive a monthly bill credit for energy delivered to the grid, which helps to offset the cost of energy pulled from the grid when the customer’s system is not producing enough energy to meet the household demand.
Net Energy Metering Plus
Net Energy Metering Plus (NEM Plus) is available only to current NEM customers. It allows NEM customers to add non-export capacity to their home or business without affecting their NEM status.
Customers may install new panels, battery storage or a combination of both under this program. The output from the NEM Plus system is used solely on-site and is not allowed to export to the grid. The addition of the NEM Plus system does not affect the customer’s existing NEM agreement.
