Bread Pudding

Ingredients:

Bread Pudding

  • 1 (1-pound) loaf French bread
  • 1 quart whole milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 1 cup raisins (may substitute 3 sliced bananas or 1 cup chocolate chips)
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted

Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg yolk, beaten
  • 3 tablespoons coffee liqueur or espresso coffee to taste, optional

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, tear bread and soak in milk for at least an hour.
  2. Heat oven to 350°F.
  3. Pour butter in a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  4. In a medium bowl, beat eggs with sugar and vanilla.
  5. Add to bread mixture.
  6. Stir in raisins.
  7. Pour into baking dish and bake for about 1 hour (or until an inserted knife comes out clean).
  8. Let cool, then cut into serving cubes.

Sauce:

  1. In a small saucepan, melt butter on low heat.
  2. Add sugar and stir until sugar dissolves.
  3. Whisk in egg yolk and cook until thicken.
  4. Remove from heat and add optional coffee liqueur or espresso coffee.
  5. To serve, plate bread pudding and top with sauce.

Serves 12.
