Chinese Five Spice BBQ Ribs

Ingredients:

Chinese Five Spice BBQ Ribs

Ribs:

  • 2 1/2 quarts water
  • 6 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup rice vinegar
  • 1 (2-pound) slab baby back ribs, cut into individual ribs
  • Non-stick cooking spray

Glaze:

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons shoyu
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons chili paste (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder

Directions:

Ribs:

  1. Mix together water, garlic, onion, bay leaves, red pepper flakes, Chinese five-spice, salt, and vinegar in a large pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Place ribs in broth, cover, and simmer for 1 hour.

Glaze:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Coat baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
  3. Whisk together the glaze ingredients in a large bowl.
  4. Remove the ribs from the broth and drain; toss with the glaze to coat.
  5. Transfer glazed ribs to the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Reserve extra glaze for brushing.
  7. Bake ribs for 15 minutes.
  8. Turn ribs and brush with more glaze.
  9. Cook 15 more minutes.
