  • 12 fresh Brown Turkey figs
  • 1/2 cup turbinado sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • 2-3 whole black peppercorns
  • 1-2 whole cardamom pods
  • 2 allspice berries
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

Directions:

  1. Wash figs; trim and discard stems.
  2. In a medium saucepan, bring sugar and water to a simmer.
  3. Stir as needed to dissolve sugar.
  4. Add cinnamon stick and spices; simmer for about 10 minutes.
  5. Place figs in syrup.
  6. Simmer about 5 minutes.
  7. Do not overcook.
  8. Remove figs from syrup and let figs and syrup cool separately for about 15 minutes.
  9. Once slightly cooled off, strain syrup, discard spices, and pour syrup back over figs.
  10. Serve over ice cream or waffles or mix with hot cereals.
  11. Enjoy figs and syrup warm or store, covered and chilled in a glass jar, for up to about 2 weeks.

Serves 4.

Tip: Brown Turkey figs are much less sweet than other figs, such as Black Mission and Adriatic, and are a good choice to use in salads or in desserts where a sweetener will be used.
