Hawaii Electric Light Company is Formed
In 1970, Hilo Electric became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Company, which gave the much needed influx of capital to serve the Big Island’s 21,000 customers spread over an area of 4,000 square miles. And in 1975, the company became Hawaii Electric Light Company, to reflect its island-wide service territory.
