Next Stage of Renewable Energy Generation Projects for Maui Virtual Community Meeting

For Maui, the company is seeking at least 180 gigawatt hours annually of renewable dispatchable energy and at least 40 megawatts of renewable firm capacity to be in service by 2027.

Next Stage of Renewable Energy Generation Projects for Oahu Virtual Community Meeting

For Oahu, Hawaiian Electric is seeking at least 475 gigawatt hours annually of variable renewable dispatchable energy to be in service by 2027. Dispatchable means the company controls when the resource is used – drawing energy from a battery storage system, for example. The company is also seeking 300 to 500 megawatts of renewable firm capacity to be in service by 2029, and 200 megawatts of renewable firm capacity to be in service by 2033.

Virtual public meeting on proposed battery energy storage at West Loch Solar in Ewa Beach

Hawaiian Electric held a virtual community meeting on Thursday, March 31, 6:30 p.m., via Microsoft Teams and Facebook Live, to introduce its proposed battery energy storage system that would be located at the existing West Loch Solar facility in Ewa Beach.

Public Meeting on Plans for Firm Renewable Energy on Oahu

To help meet Hawaii’s decarbonization goals, Hawaiian Electric will file a draft Request for Proposals for firm renewable energy procurement for Oahu. Firm renewable energy differs from intermittent resources such as solar and wind in that it is available for use at all times, except when undergoing maintenance. This has been an important part of Hawaiian Electric's plans dating back to its 2016 Power Supply Improvement Plan.

Hawaii VEX Robotics State Championships

Sponsored by Hawaiian Electric, the Hawaii VEX Robotics State Championships held in February and March qualified 32 out of 77 Hawaii VEX robotics teams to advance to the 2022 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, May 3-12.
