Hawaiian Electric donations benefit West Oahu community

HONOLULU, July 15, 2022 – Hawaiian Electric has donated a total of $45,000 to three nonprofit organizations that are working to improve the resilience and sustainability of the West Oahu community.
Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, which includes club locations in Ewa Beach, Nanakuli and Waianae, will direct the funds to its “What’s Next Initiative.” The intense 5-year youth mentoring program is intended for at-risk eighth graders. Students receive ongoing support throughout their high school years and after graduation to ensure they become caring, productive citizens in their communities.
Kuleana Coral Reefs will use Hawaiian Electric’s donation to study the thriving and resilient population of corals and fish at the Kahe Power Plant outflow and create thermal maps that will help inform coral reef restoration projects in West Oahu and across the state.
Part of the donation also will be used for an accredited dive safety training program that will expand Kuleana Coral Reefs’ capacity for impactful coral reef restoration, enable in-house diver training, increase diver safety through education, and facilitate partnerships with other accredited institutions.
U.S.VETS – Waianae will be able to meet the needs of more than 1,000 homeless individuals, couples and families on the Waianae Coast by providing on-site shelter services, including housing, counseling and employment assistance. Services are provided in a safe and compassionate environment that is responsive to the challenges households face as they transition out of homelessness and achieve long-term self sufficiency.
