HONOLULU, Feb. 21, 2025 – Guided by the theme “Lokahi” meaning unity, harmony and working together to achieve a sense of balance, Hawaiian Electric employees, retirees and the IBEW Local 1260 together raised more than $423,000 for Aloha United Way and Hawaii Island United Way during a workplace campaign last year.
Funds totalling $374,186.77 raised by Oahu and Maui County employees for Aloha United Way will support its partner nonprofit, charitable organizations on Oahu and in Maui County that are working to build a healthier, stronger and more equitable Hawaii in which families and communities can thrive. Funds amounting to $49,803.65 raised by Hawaii Island employees will support its local United Way programs and services focused on effecting positive change in the areas of education, financial stability and health.
“In these uncertain and challenging times, it’s even more important that we band together to support these agencies which ensure funds and resources are distributed where they can do the most good,” said Michael DeCaprio, Hawaiian Electric vice president of Power Supply and the company’s workplace campaign executive sponsor. “I’m proud of our employees for continuing to help make a meaningful impact in our community.”
Sales of a limited-edition cookbook for employees kicked off the company’s 2024 in-house campaign, which also marked the return of a popular golf tournament, sales of Lokahi-themed logo attire and merchandise, and an online pledge drive.
Employees across the utility’s five-island service areas also continued a long-standing company tradition of giving back to their communities. In 2024, employees along with their families and friends volunteered about 6,895 hours over 127 community events; donated nearly 800 units of blood/apheresis; and collected about $5,530 and 1,183 pounds of food for local food banks.
