Apple Cake Instructions:
- Cream shortening and sugar.
- Add egg and beat thoroughly.
- Sift flour, baking powder, and salt; add alternately with the combined milk and vanilla.
- Pour into a greased and lined 8-inch square cake pan.
- Cover with layer of apple slices; sprinkle with 1 tablespoon powdered sugar and butter.
- Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.
- Invert onto a platter; sprinkle with remaining sugar and cinnamon.
- Cut in squares and serve warm with Soft Custard Sauce.
Makes 8 servings.
Note: Apples sink to the bottom during baking.
Soft Custard Sauce Instructions:
- In a saucepan, combine eggs, sugar, and salt; mix well.
- Add the milk to the egg mixture; mix thoroughly.
- Cook over medium heat until mixture coats a spoon.
- Add vanilla.
- Serve over Apple Cake.
