Sun Power for Schools
Kohala High School
On April 4, 2008, Kohala High School became the 27th school (6th on the Big Island) to receive a Sun Power for Schools photovoltaic (PV) system. The 1-kilowatt PV system was installed on the walkway roof of Building C. With the installation, students can enhance their hands-on experience with renewable energy and learn how to harness the sun's power safely, effectively, and efficiently. The data collected from the PV system can be integrated into the students' curriculum while the power produced helps to reduce the school's electric bill.
System Details:
- 1.05 kilowatt (kW) rated peak
- Six (6) Sharp NT-175U1 175-watt mono-crystalline modules
- Sunny boy 1800U inverter
- Internet-based data acquisition system, including wind speed, PV output, irradiance, and ambient air temperature
