Sun Power for Schools
Laupahoehoe High School
Laupahoehoe High School is the 15th school to receive a Sun Power for Schools photovoltaic system. A photovoltaic area lighting system was installed alongside the school’s main entrance on February 23, 2001.
The pole-mounted system consists of solar panels, an enclosure that houses batteries and a solar lighting controller, and luminaires. The solar panels charge the batteries with DC electricity during the day and the batteries power the luminaires at night. The solar lighting controller regulates battery charging/discharging and controls lighting operation.
System Details:
- Five 50-watt single-crystalline solar panels (250 watts total)
- Two 112 amp-hr sealed gel batteries (224 amp-hr total); 5-day autonomy
- Charge/light controller (light operation: dusk to 11 P.M. and 2 A.M to dawn)
- Two flood light fixtures - each with a 35-watt low-pressure sodium lamp
- Read-only indicator (battery charge status and panel output)
