We use advanced technology and weather monitoring to identify the areas most at risk for the conditions that would require a PSPS. Communities at the highest risk of wildfires, as indicated on the PSPS Maps, are more likely to experience a PSPS. Check the map to see if you live in one of these areas.

When the extreme weather conditions settle, Hawaiian Electric crews will visually inspect power lines, electrical infrastructure, and surrounding areas for damage. Once they have determined the all-clear, we will reenergize power to the affected areas. This process could take hours or even days, depending on the location and extent of any damage.

Prior to and during PSPS events, we actively coordinate with local government, first responders, and essential service providers to discuss PSPS protocols. Communication channels remain open for ongoing coordination.

Yes, all customers with or without rooftop solar (PV) will be shut off during a PSPS event.  However, it should be noted that some customers may have battery backup which could provide power to their home loads even while utility power is shut off.

Generally, rooftop solar inverters shut off with the loss of utility power which results in the photovoltaic (PV) system not being able to produce any energy to serve loads or export to the grid.  However, certain systems with energy storage can provide backup power if they have an automatic transfer switch (ATS) or similar device.  Customers with energy storage should check with their solar contractors for information on whether their battery can provide backup power in the event of a utility outage.

Portable generators can be used for backup power in case of a power outage or PSPS event. Please review our Generator Safety page before using a portable generator.

Yes, please contact our commercial services team at (808) 543-7777 if you plan to use backup generators. Precautions are necessary to avoid electrical back feed to our crews.

During a PSPS, please visit PlugShare to locate an EV charging station in areas unaffected by the power shutoff. It is advisable to maintain your electric vehicle’s charge level at least half full.

Yes, if you suspect that your sensitive electronic equipment has sustained damage due to a power outage, you can file a claim within 30 days of the outage.

As a regulated public utility, Hawaiian Electric’s activities and the responsibilities of utility customers are governed by a set of rules approved by the Public Utilities Commission of the State of Hawaii, which are known as tariffs. View our tariffs.

Please note that customers and customer-owned equipment must comply with good engineering practices, applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, and customers are required to take appropriate actions to protect their electrical equipment, such as use of surge protectors and other protective equipment.
