Q:

What work will the Participant need to perform?

A:

The Participant will be responsible for the selection, purchase, installation, and maintenance of the EV charging equipment. The Participant may also be responsible for informing the landowner and seeking appropriate approvals if applicable.

Q:

Can Participants bill drivers for usage?

A:

Yes, the Participants can choose to charge drivers for electricity or offer it for free. If the site charges a fee to drivers, they can either pass along their rate directly to drivers or create a custom pricing plan.

Q:

Will the charging stations be on a separate and dedicated meter if I enroll in Charge Up Commercial?

A:

Yes, a dedicated meter for Commercial charging is required under this pilot, and to qualify for applicable rates such as EV-J and EV-P.

Q:

Who will own and operate the charging stations?

A:

The Participant will own and operate the charging stations and be responsible for usage and maintenance costs. Under the Pilot, the customer must maintain the charging stations for 10 years.

Q:

Who pays for the cost of energy for the charging equipment?

A:

The Participant is responsible for the cost of energy consumed by the charging equipment. All charging equipment will be on a dedicated meter and take service on schedule EV- J or EV-P, which offer lower rates for charging in off-peak or mid-day periods. Learn more about our Commercial rates.

Q:

What should be included in a conceptual design plan?

A:

The conceptual design plan is an aerial view or plan view of your charging installation. We need this so we can identify the closest service to your installation or understand where your requested Point of Entry (POE) is located. The plan should include:

  • where your chargers and parking spots are located;
  • a clearly marked point of entry, if you are requesting one;
  • approximate distance from the nearest curb line with streets labeled, and;
  • a north arrow.

Q:

Are there cost caps in the program?

A:

Yes, there are caps for program eligible costs, including customer and potential utility costs. To find out more about the current cost caps, please email our program team at GoEV@hawaiianelectric.com.

Q:

Can I apply for both the Charge Up Commercial Pilot Program and the Hawaii Energy EV Charging Station Rebate?

A:

Yes, you can apply for both programs.
