HONOLULU, Feb. 25, 2025 – Hawaiian Electric crews and contractors for the electric utility will perform repairs and upgrades of the downtown underground network along Merchant Street between Bethel Street and Fort Street Mall starting Thursday, Feb. 27, through Wednesday, July 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily, excluding weekends and holidays.

The routine maintenance work will close the far-left lane of Merchant fronting Pioneer Plaza and temporarily restrict parking in the loading zone during the scheduled hours when crews are working in a manhole. The sidewalk in the vicinity also may be temporarily blocked and pedestrians directed around the work zone.

Safety signs and traffic cones will mark the job site, and flagmen will direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Due to the nature of the work, the traffic plan may change without notice for the safety of the public and crews.

Motorists are encouraged to drive with caution when approaching and passing the crews at work, use alternate routes when possible, and plan for traffic delays in the downtown Honolulu area.
