Utility work in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Crews to rebuild transmission line to improve system reliability and resilience
Release Date: 2/28/2025
HILO, Feb. 28, 2025 – Hawaiian Electric will begin a six-month project to rebuild a section of its transmission line inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park starting on Monday, March 3.
Crews will relocate and upgrade 56 utility poles and install new equipment along Hawaii Belt Road, or Highway 11, between mile markers 28 and 30. The project will be done in four phases – tree trimming, hole digging, installation, energization – and the work will require intermittent closures of one lane of Hawaii Belt Road from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution when approaching the work zone. Flagmen will be onsite to provide traffic control.
The project is expected to be completed by September, weather permitting.
