Utility work to begin Sat., 3/8, in Kalihi Kai near future substation; overnight hours start 3/10 and end 3/15

Motorists can expect traffic, street parking impacts as crews complete work

HONOLULU, March 5, 2025 – Hawaiian Electric crews will string power lines in Kalihi Kai as part of construction of the future Auiki Substation, impacting traffic and street parking. The project requires pre-construction work on Saturday, March 8, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with overnight work commencing 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday, March 10, through Saturday, March 15.

Street parking impacts
From 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. March 10-15, ‘no parking’ barriers will mark restricted zones on both sides of the following streets:

  • Auiki Street between Kalihi Street and Puuhale Road
  • Mokauea Street near the intersection with Auiki St.
  • Kalihi Street between Auiki and Republican streets

Lane closures

  • Saturday, 3/8, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: Mauka-bound lane of Mokauea Street closed between Auiki and Mary streets

Overnight traffic impacts from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.:

  • Monday, 3/10, to Tuesday, 3/11: Makai-bound lanes of Kalihi St. closed between Homerule and Silva streets. Makai-bound traffic will be contraflowed in the left mauka-bound lane of Kalihi St. with mauka-bound traffic in the right lane.
  • Tuesday, 3/11, to Wednesday, 3/12: Makai-bound lanes of Kalihi St. closed between Kahai and Auiki streets. Makai-bound traffic contraflowed in left mauka-bound lane of Kalihi St. with mauka-bound traffic in right lane.
  • Wednesday, 3/12, to Thursday, 3/13: Ewa-bound lane of Auiki St. closed between Puuhale Rd. and Kalihi St. Ewa-bound traffic contraflowed in eastbound lane of Auiki St. Eastbound traffic to use open parking lane.
  • Thursday, 3/13, to Friday, 3/14 & Friday, 3/14 to Saturday, 3/15: Section of Mokauea St. partially closed between Mary and Auiki streets. Closure of Road No. 2, which is used for cargo transport.

Message boards have been posted to alert motorists of the upcoming work. Special duty police and flagmen will be onsite to assist motorists while crews are at work. Safety signs and traffic cones will mark the work zone. Motorists should avoid the area or drive with caution when approaching and passing the work zone and expect traffic delays.
