WEDNESDAY UPDATE 5 P.M.: Power in Launiupoko to Olowalu, Upcountry area expected to be restored by weekend

KAHULUI, Aug. 23, 2023 – Hawaiian Electric is aiming to restore power to a majority of customers in the Launiupoko to Olowalu area and Upcountry area by the weekend as crews safely rebuild sections of Maui’s electric grid.
In West Maui, crews are working to energize new distribution lines from a second mobile substation installed in the Lahaina area. When the complex work is completed, crews will safely restore power to approximately 500 customers in the Launiupoko to Olowalu area.
Also, in West Maui, aerial inspections were conducted today and are scheduled for Friday, Aug. 25, to survey transmission lines from Olowalu to Napili.
In Upcountry, power is expected to be restored to a majority of remaining pockets of customers before the weekend after specialized cable needed for repairs in the area arrived from Oahu, Hawaii Island and Kauai Island Utility Cooperative.
Customers currently without power are being directly notified on the steps being taken to restore power safely and reliably to their properties.
More than 80% of the customers who lost electricity have their power back on. Over 90% of all customers on Maui have electricity.
More than 400 Hawaiian Electric employees and contractors, including those from Hawaii Island, Lanai, Molokai and Oahu, are on Maui to help with restoration work.
