Sun Power for Schools
McKinley High School
On January 23, 1998, McKinley High School became the third Oahu school to receive a sun-powered rooftop solar system from the Sun Power for Schools program. The system was set up on the school's gymnasium roof.
Original system details:
- Two kilowatts (kW) rated peak
- Eight 4x6 foot panels, weighing 110 pounds each (Manufacturer: ASE, Type: ASE-300-DB/50-285)
- DC and AC disconnection switches
- Omnion inverter to convert DC current to AC
- Autotransformer
- Data acquisition system (Data collection can be monitored and analyzed by students as part of integrated renewable energy lessons)
In April 2004 the Omnion inverter was replaced with a SunnyBoy 2500U inverter. On October 5, 2011 the system was retrofitted with eight new PV panels to replace the older system.

- Eight Suntech Pluto245-wde panels
- Eight Enphase M215 microinverters
- AC utility disconnect
- Enphase Envoy Communications Gateway
