The War Years
During World War II, military operations in the Pacific grew. On Maui, the wartime power requirements of several bases, including the 4th Marine Division at Camp Maui in Kokomo and Kahului Naval Air Station, meant power shortages for the sugar plantations. Nearly 50 percent of the power generated by HC&S was delivered by Maui Electric to the military. During that time, the plantation often had to suspend pumping water for field irrigation.
